Restarting a Professional Chapter:

From Decline to Thriving, Diverse Community

Client: A local chapter of a professional coaching association, built on integrity, excellence, collaboration, and respect.

The Challenge

Membership had declined, the board had disengaged, and operations — events, the website, governance — had effectively stalled. After 18 months of consolidation talks, the chapter faced a real decision point: close for good, or restart from the ground up.

What We Found

The path forward wasn't more of the same, done harder. It was a different value promise. Rather than resource-heavy monthly events that had become difficult to sustain, the chapter needed to become the place to find a coach, be a coach, and build community — shifting its focus toward awareness, outreach, and connection.

Our Approach

We rebuilt the chapter around lean, sustainable structure:

  • Lean governance and continuity — restarted with four core roles and a two-year presidential commitment, to give the chapter real stability and a clear succession path

  • Focus and simplification — quarterly events, a refreshed website, activated social channels, and targeted partnerships in place of an overloaded events calendar

  • Diversity and access — broadened board representation and mobilized volunteers across the metro area to extend the chapter's reach

The Shift

Membership grew from roughly 50 to nearly 200 by year's end. The board became full and genuinely engaged, with volunteers leading local groups across the region. Just as importantly, the energy in the chapter shifted — from depletion to momentum, gratitude, and participation — carrying through to a smooth leadership transition the following year.

Impact & Value

  • Community rebuilt and chapter vitality restored

  • A proven operating model: focused deliverables can scale participation without burning out volunteers

Why This Matters

Volunteer-run associations thrive when governance is right-sized and the value promise is clear. Designing for sustainability and inclusivity grows membership, diversifies leadership, and delivers consistent impact.
